Singer Shakira Facing 8 Years In Prison For Tax Fraud

Shakira claims to have paid them in full and wants to take it to trial.

Prosecutors in Spain said on Friday that if Colombian music diva Shakira is found guilty of alleged tax fraud in an upcoming trial, they would ask for a term of eight years and two months in jail.

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is accused of owing the Spanish government $15 million in back taxes from 2012 to 2014. Prosecutors have indicated that they would also seek a penalty fine of 24 million euros.

Six different charges are laid forth in the indictment against her. This week, the artist opted to go to trial rather than accept a plea agreement from prosecutors. It’s unclear when the trial will begin.

Publicists for the singer said in a statement on Friday that the singer “has always complied and abided by the law, exhibiting excellent behavior as an individual and a taxpayer.” The publicists claimed that the Spanish Tax Agency had violated her rights.

Prosecutors in Barcelona claim the Grammy winner should have paid taxes in Spain since she spent more than half of each year between 2012 and 2014 there. According to her publicists, Shakira has paid off her alleged tax due to the Spanish Tax Agency in full.

Shakira and Gerard Piqué, a player for FC Barcelona, were together for 11 years and had two children.
