Queen Elizabeth II has been Queen since 1952.
As reported by Buckingham Palace, Queen Elizabeth II passed away on Thursday at 96. She had been the longest-reigning British monarch, with a reign that extended seven decades.
One of the most famous queens in history, Elizabeth II reigned over the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth states. Upon her passing, Charles, her son, became King instantly.

After physicians expressed worry about her condition on Thursday, they called for the family to come to see her and she passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
When her father, King George VI, died in 1952, Elizabeth became monarch. She presided over the latter days of the British Empire, through which she saw it through global turmoil and internal controversy, and during which she drastically modernized the monarchy.
